Ministers

Alan Johnson, Home Secretary

The Home Secretary is responsible for all the work of the Home Office, including:

  • crime reduction;
  • security;
  • counter-terrorism;
  • immigration;
  • civil emergencies; and
  • expenditure issues.

He is also the ministerial adviser on parliamentary affairs.

Phil Woolas, Minister of State

Phil Woolas MP is the Home Office Minister of State for borders and immigration and also HM Treasury Minister of State with responsibility for revenue protection at the border. He is the lead minister for all the work of the UK Border Agency. His responsibilities include:

  • strengthening borders, including the e-Borders programme;
  • visas and biometric visas;
  • asylum;
  • enforcement and removals, including enforcement strategy;
  • managed migration, including the points-based system and the Migration Advisory Committee;
  • wider impacts of migration, including the Migration Impacts Forum;
  • citizenship;
  • the operational delivery of the UK Border Agency's revenue protection functions;
  • delivery of targets covering revenue protection and the examination of goods at the frontier; and
  • working closely with Treasury ministerial colleagues to shape effective operational policy based on the UK Border Agency's experience of implementation.

Meg Hillier, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for identity

Meg Hillier is Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for identity. In addition to supporting Phil Woolas on immigration and asylum issues, she is responsible for the work of the Identity and Passport Service, identity management and biometrics.
